Reproduction of currants: methods
Content:
In this article, we will tell you about the propagation of currants in different ways. Currants propagate both by cuttings and by branches. They take root rather quickly and without special conditions, and in the future there are no problems with this, the bushes themselves bear fruit well and grow quickly.
Currants have a vegetative way of reproduction, that is, this means that they can, both by cuttings, and green and already lignified, and by branches. This method allows you to propagate the culture without much cost and effort. The most important thing is to choose a good mother bush, healthy, without signs of disease. Diseases such as terry are transmitted along with the planting material. The initial bush that you want to use for reproduction needs to be chosen more carefully, your entire further harvest depends on it. We immediately examine the bush for signs of various diseases and pest infestations. This is easy enough to determine. Unhealthy plants have deformed leaves and flowers that are bright white or purple in color. Also, the pest can hide in the kidneys, if they are too swollen, then they are damaged by a kidney mite. Only completely healthy, varietal, with large fruits will suit us. No need to waste time spreading painful currant species in your garden. If you don't have a suitable bush, you can buy it at any agricultural fair.
Propagation of currants using green cuttings
The advantages of this method are that only the tops of the shoots, annual shoots are used, and they do not in any way affect the number of shoots in the future, on the growth of the plant as a whole. That is, climatic conditions are not at all important, there will always be green cuttings. It is necessary to reproduce with green cuttings in May, when they have already grown up enough, at least 3 buds have formed, and it is possible to cut 10-12 cm. It is necessary to cut it in the immediate vicinity of the buds. The soil must be well moistened before planting. We plant in the ground, up to the top with the first leaves, with a slight slope. We mulch and water the planting site. Then you need to sometimes remove the weeds. During the first two weeks, the plant will already start up the first roots, after a month it will take root quite steadily. In the first week, you need to water well for the successful development of the root system. By the fall, when the bush has already grown 20-30 centimeters, it can be transplanted to a permanent place. As you can see, no special effort is required.
Propagation of currants using lignified cuttings
In this case, we prepare the planting material already in March, when the buds are still visible, but not swollen, or from autumn from September to October. We choose the bush itself from 2 to 4 years old. We cut off the shoot, so that there is no stump left in the ground at this place, that is, at the very root. The tops can be immediately removed and thrown away, because, as a rule, pests can remain there. Then we make cuttings about 15-18 cm in size, and so that the distance from the kidney to the end is 1 cm from the top, and a little less from the bottom. To facilitate planting cuttings in the ground, we immediately make slanting cuts. It is necessary to store in the cold so that the buds do not bloom, that is, a kind of freezing effect. You can put the cuttings on the street in the snow, cover with some material or film, and if the spring is too warm, then you can store it in the refrigerator, having previously wrapped it in film. Moreover, the cuttings that are stored in the refrigerator must be moistened, otherwise they will simply dry out.Planting such cuttings is as simple as possible - you just need to stick them into the ground, at an inclination of 45 degrees, keeping a distance of about 15 cm from each other, and the first shoot should remain directly on the ground. 2-3 buds should remain at the top. The cuttings need to be trampled a little to the ground, fixed, organic fertilizer must be applied. By the fall, these cuttings will grow into independent seedlings, which can be transplanted to a permanent place or sold. Some gardeners make these seedlings biennial, that is, the cuttings are kept in this state for two years. In this case, next spring it is necessary to remove fresh shoots, leaving only 2-3 buds. This method allows you to grow a stable root system of impressive size. Such roots are not afraid of any climatic whims and transplants. Cut shoots can also be planted using the method described above.
Reproduction using layering
For this method, the reproduction of currants, we select only annual shoots, we simply drop the layers from the main one with earth. The soil must first be prepared for this. Loosen well, apply fertilizers, you can do with organic - manure or slurry., Even compost will do. This is so that the soil can retain the moisture needed for the roots to germinate. At the planting site, we make a small depression, we seal it with our hands so that the branch does not go back, you can fix it with improvised means, for example, with a piece of wood or a metal support. We fix it only until the layer gives the first roots, then you need to release it. The tops of the branches, those that are left with leaves on the top, the rest must be covered with earth, not too deep, 1-2 cm is enough. From the buds that remain in the ground, branches will begin to grow at the onset of spring, they need to be periodically spud to form adventitious roots. During the season, you need to huddle a couple of times, and watch the soil, you cannot overdry it, you need to water it as necessary.
In the fall, we dig out the layers. Each shoot should have formed separate full-fledged seedlings with their own root system, which are closest to the original bush should already be full-fledged plants, the rest should still be grown. The strongest seedlings are first separated from the rest of the shoots with the help of a secateurs, then you can immediately plant them in a permanent place. This is what we described the horizontal propagation method by layering. But there is also a vertical method. For example, red currants have very thick branches, it is difficult to bend them to the ground. This method works equally well with young bushes and mature ones. The bottom line is simple - we just cut off the branches near the bush, leaving only the stump. New branches will grow from this hemp. When the growths are already 20 cm in height, it is necessary to loosen the soil around and huddle up to half. We carry out this procedure constantly. And we monitor the moisture in the soil. With the onset of autumn, we simply cut off the formed seedlings with roots and transplant them to a permanent place.
All these methods are very simple and straightforward, even an inexperienced gardener can cope with this task. So save your money, do these little procedures, choose the breeding method that suits you best, and get down to business. The most important condition is to choose a healthy mother bush.
